PillSeal vs Medisafe

This page has not been translated yet and is shown in English.

Medisafe is the most widely used medication reminder on the App Store, and for most people it is a perfectly good one. This page is about where the two apps genuinely differ, so you can pick the one that matches how you actually miss doses.

The short version

PillSeal is built for people who dismiss notifications without noticing. Medisafe is built for people who want their medication history in the cloud, shared and backed up.

If your problem is forgetting, either app helps. If your problem is swiping the reminder away and then not remembering whether you took it, that is the specific gap PillSeal was made for.

Where they differ

PillSeal Medisafe
Reminder type A real iOS alarm Push notification
Sounds through silent and Focus Yes No
Confirms the dose actually happened Camera check-in Tap to mark taken
Account required No Yes
Data location Your device only Their servers
Platforms iPhone iPhone and Android
Family or caregiver alerts No Yes

The alarm

This is the real difference. Medisafe sends a push notification, which is what almost every reminder app sends. Notifications are designed to be dismissible, so they are silenced by silent mode and Focus, and they are easy to swipe away on autopilot.

PillSeal schedules a genuine iOS alarm, the same mechanism as your morning wake-up. It sounds through silent mode and Do Not Disturb, and it comes back until you take the dose.

That is a deliberate trade. A forcing alarm is the right tool for a medication you cannot afford to miss, and the wrong tool for a vitamin you are relaxed about.

Dose confirmation

Both apps let you record that a dose happened. The difference is what “taken” means.

In most apps it means you tapped a button, which is something you can do out of habit without the dose actually happening. PillSeal opens a short camera moment instead: a calm few seconds while you take your dose, ending in a small affirmation. It runs entirely on your device.

Accounts and privacy

Medisafe uses an account, which is what makes cloud sync, multi-device access and its caregiver features possible. Those are real benefits and they require a server.

PillSeal has no account and no server. Your medications, schedule, history and photos never leave your iPhone. That is also a trade: no sync between devices, no web access, and no way for us to recover anything for you.

When Medisafe is the better choice

Genuinely, in several cases:

  • You want a family member notified when you miss a dose. PillSeal has no caregiver feature at all.
  • You are on Android, or you switch between iPhone and Android.
  • You want your history synced across devices, or accessible if you lose your phone.
  • You want a free option. Medisafe has a free tier; PillSeal is a paid subscription after a 3-day trial.

When PillSeal is the better choice

  • Notifications do not get through to you, whether because of silent mode, Focus, or habit.
  • You have genuinely lost track of whether you took a dose and want something more than a tap.
  • You would rather your health data not exist on anyone’s server, including ours.
  • You are on iPhone and only iPhone.
